Presentation of class material via Powerpoint (ppt or pdf files). In addition, updated class material (theory and exercises) is uploaded in e-class. Exercises are solved in class.

CLASS CONTENT

1.Introduction: Quantitative and qualitative measurements – Errors and residuals.

2. Statistics on replicate measurements: Average, standard deviation, variance, distributions of replicate measurements.             

3. Statistics on replicate measurements: Confidence intervals of the means of large samples, Confidence intervals of the means of small samples. Presentation and illustration of results.

4. Calibration of instruments for atmospheric measurements: Regressions and correlations.             

5. Graphical illustration of data - Data transformation, t-test, Tukey test and test Dunnett.

6. ANOVA for comparison of multiple means - Fullfactorialdesigns.

7. FractionalfactorialdesignsMixtureexperiments.

8.Empirical model development – Coefficient of determination R2.

9. Qualitative variables and field collection of qualitative data.

10. Analysis of qualitative data.

11. Non-parametric statistical tests (Mann Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon, Χ²).

12.Correlation of qualitative variables.

GOALS AND EXPECTED RESULTS:

 

Goal of the course is to render the students familiar with the principles of applied statistics in Engineering. Definitions, factorial and non-factorial designs. Conclusions and statistical data analysis.

EVALUATION METHODS:

Evaluation will be based on written exams and laboratory exercises.
