MODE OF DELIVERY:

In-class presentation of concepts, techniques and calculation methods, accompanied by problem solving. Homework assignment along with guidelines and assisting classes for problems solving. Weekly written tests on homework.

 

CONTACT TEACHING:

4 hours lectures and 2 assisting classes.

 

COURSES CONTENTS:

Properties (temperature, pressure, volume, internal energy, enthalpy) of pure substances (water, air etc) and their values at certain conditions (tables of thermodynamic properties).

1st law of thermodynamics and calculations on the concept of energy conservation in closed (tanks, cylinders) and open (compressors, pumps, turbines, heat exchangers etc) systems. The concepts of work and heat.

2nd law of thermodynamics, the concept and the restrictions of engines which take heat and return work (thermal engines). Engines which consume work to transfer heat (heat pumps and refridgerators). Thermal efficiency and coefficients of performance.

Entropy, irreversibilities and deviations between actual and ideal engines and devices. Isentropic efficiency.

Operating concepts and power/efficiency calculations in ideal and actual thermal engines (internal combustion engines, gas and steam turbines).

Operating concepts and heat transfer calculations in ideal and actual heat pumps and refrigerators.

Thermodynamic properties of gaseous mixtures and steams. Cooling processes.

Thermodynamics of chemical reactions.
